Uncle Albert Pinkney Wilson

Albert Pinkney Wilson

1825-1928

Albert Pinkney Wilson was the seventh child born to Hiram Wilson 1787-1870 and Nancy Smith Wilson 1793-1859. He was born April 14, 1825, at Cove Creek, Watauga County, NC, according to a 1926 newspaper article. About 1850 he married Elizabeth Councill who lived from 1828-1876. Uncle Albert lived quietly at his farm up until the outbreak of the Civil War. He enlisted in the 37th North Carolina Infantry and soon rose to the rank of lieutenant.
During the War, he recalled that he was wounded and just within a few yards of General Stonewall Jackson when he was killed by his own men. Uncle Albert was at a dressing station getting his wounds taken care of and heard these volley of shots fired. When he inquired about the shots, he found out that Jackson had been shot.
John Quincy Adams was President of the United States when he was born., and the first President he voted for was Zachary Taylor in 1849. As a result, he voted for the Democratic Party all of his life. In his lifetime he saw twenty-four Presidents come and go.
At the time of Stoneman's famous raid through Boone with his bushwhackers, he saw the homes of his neighbors burned and sacked by these outlaws, who belonged neither to the Union nor the Confederacy, but were deserters from both. He recalled also the foray by Vaughn's Calvary, another band of bushwhackers, who made a similar raid on Boone later and were pursued as far as Newton by a group of citizens under J. W. Councill and Colonel J. W. Bryan. At the time of Uncle Albert's 101st birthday, Colonel Bryan was still alive and one his closest friends.
Uncle Albert died February 4, 1928 just a few weeks short of his 103rd birthday. He was laid to rest at the Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens at Boone, Watauga County, North Carolina. Albert Wilson was the younger brother of Martha's father, Lt. Isaac Wilson 1822-1864.

  1. From a researcher in Watauga County, NC: "At the death of his wife he sold his Cove Creek property. He moved to Boone. It was across from Three Forks Baptist Church. {Personal knowledge} Mary his daughter who married James C. Greene lived with him. Also Laura his daughter did too. When Mary & James had their children they also remained with her father. Albert P. Wilson. A three generation house it was. Alma his granddaughter adored him. He sat in the corner of the fireplace. She washed his little face & fed him. Alma married Oscar May at about 38 years old. It was Alma & Oscar who stayed with James C. Greene & took care of them until they died. Then Oscar & Alma went to Ohio. If not mistaken A portion of you Granduncle Albert P. Wilson's land was given to Three Forks Baptist Church for the parking lot. {As told to me by Alma} If you ever need to look about this, it may have been given after Albert P Wilson passed."
